Today Ancestry.com emailed me an update on my DNA analysis of several years ago which identifies some of my origin at 1% to be "Madeira, officially the Autonomous Region of Madeira, which  is an autonomous region of Portugal, in the Atlantic Ocean about 805 km (500 miles) southwest of mainland Portugal. Together with the Azores, it's one of the two autonomous regions of Portugal and a special territory of the European Union. It is the southernmost point and region of Portugal." Source: Wikipedia

This 1% is fun because there has long been speculation that the islands of Madeira, along with the Azores and the Canary Islands, are the remnants of the lost archipelago of Atlantis, home to Atlanteans who were "moral and spiritual people living in a highly advanced civilization."
