Painting Under The Eaves
I visited my parents from year to year, and they usually asked me to help them with some big project, which I enjoyed doing. In 1987 all three of my parents' children were visiting and Mother asked us all to paint under the eaves of her house, a difficult task even for professional painters who have the proper equipment. But I agreed readily because I was fairly young, energetic, and I enjoyed the challenge, plus my parents paid me nicely. I thought all three of us adult children were painting under the eaves because we all started out together painting in the morning. Then I got to the side of the house where I could see in the window where my lazy siblings were lolling about in the family room. I finished the job as soon as possible, but I was unable to find out if we all got paid or just the one who actually worked. I was ambivalent in that I was glad to have helped my parents but resentful at being made a fool.
