No Midnight Blue For You

Midnight blue colored clothing is typically not for those of lower social status. What is midnight blue? Midnight blue and navy blue are similar but midnight blue has a luster reminiscent of the sky at midnight, hence its name. Midnight blue is a very, very dark blue—the darkest blue. Almost black. Navy blue is a dark or darkish blue, not at all the same color, in my perception. Neither is indigo, ergo the different names.

My first party dress was handmade of midnight blue velvet. I felt as beautiful as midnight in the sky as I danced in the school auditorium with shy, strong, hormonal young men. But when I started working I could not find midnight blue clothing available off-the-rack. So I had only navy-colored clothing and shoes in my wardrobe. Then sometime in 1980's navy-colored clothing was no longer readily available. No joy as they say. It seemed that only the military were wearing it.

Just recently I realized that dark navy-colored tops, dresses, and suits are available online, and even navy-colored shoes to complete the look. But midnight blue is still not available to the hoi polloi. The elite have garnered that deepest blue color in their military uniforms and in the formal business attire of the political class. They wear midnight blue in fine wool or silk, in natural, lustrous fibers. They wear expensive shoes that match their dark and dignified clothing. I feel envy. I want my favorite color of midnight blue to be accessible to me. I resent being restricted to a washed-out navy-color. Sure, we all wear blue jeans, but dull denim is nothing like the rich, lush color of midnight blue. We got robbed. Again.

What color is dark midnight?
