Dented And Not Fancy
Some gifts from the Augusta Food Bank this month, after waiting ten days to get in were: a dented can of Treet and a not-so-fancy-grade chayote squash, a.k.a. vegetable pear or mirliton. This is my dinner today and I am looking forward to it. The dented can of Treet processed ham loaf will be easy for my old, achy hands to slice, respect the pig's sacrifice that gives me life coaxes me to eat those tidbits, from its ears and snoot to its tail. (In truth this is yucky soft but tasty.) The chayote squash is something I have seen but never purchased as it is too expensive. It is supposed to be crunchy with a neutral flavor so I planned to toss it in my favorite cucumber sauce, which is sugar water with a splash of sweet sipping vinegar. However, the chayote squash was brown-rotten under its peel so instead I had Bartlett pear and sweet potato instead, which also gifted to me by the AFB. I am not sure what it is, but cranberry drink from the AFB washed it all down.
