The Price Of His Good Story Is Sticky Horror

Sooo, Stephen King was high as a kite* when he wrote the horror that helped shape our culture. Reputedly he made a fortune off of the dirty deed of thoroughly polluting readers' minds with fantasy blood, gratuitous guts, extra gore, and fear. He wrote evil for the sake of evil with no redeeming qualities. The catch is that once you read him you cannot forget his sticky horror.

Stephen King has been a terrific, prolific storyteller.** The tragedy is that Stephen King is such an excellent storyteller that he grabbed a big chunk of American culture and turned it into horror. He and his ilk created long-lasting associations between benign elements in our culture and his drug-fueled monstrosities, associations that cause sickening fear but have no basis in reality. Quite a legacy, no?
