Blue Jeans Are A Lie

Annmarie Throckmorton, M.A.

Blue jeans are a pretense, a farmer's costume worn by people who do not have a farm, who will never have a farm, who will probably never even set foot on a farm. Nevertheless, everyone in the entire world who can afford blue jeans is wearing stiff, scratchy, binding, rather ugly blue jeans. I wear them, you wear them, we are all wearing blue jeans. We have an entire planetful of blue jeaned legs, as if we were all in a blue jean uniform, ready to march off to work on our pretend farms. Sadly, the powers that be have moved most of us off of our birthright farms and into boxes in cities; leaving us with only the illusion of being farmers in the blue jeans we wear.

But no one goes whole hog for heavy-duty denim bib overalls with a protective flap over the chest, that would be taking the lie too far. That is what real farmers wear for their hardest work.
