Stifled
When I was a little girl, my maternal grandmother would catch me whistling and admonish me sternly, "Whistling girls and crowing hens always come to some bad end." I was whistling to enjoy myself and to understand music but she, an experienced organist, would not let me learn to play a musical instrument either.
Why stifle a little girl? That is just cruel and it is still happening all over the world.
