Estoppel!

My new favorite word is estoppel! (Eee-STOP-all) as in an exited squeal “Eeee!” because I just found something that will “STOP” my opponents in their tracks, “all” of them are astonished and stopped suddenly and completely.

Newly hatched attorneys probably imprint on this word when they first encounter it, and are eager to use it. I certainly am. The courts probably find that this complex word is overused and misunderstood. Nevertheless, estoppel is my new favorite word.

Contemporary Definition:

Estoppel is a judicial device in common law legal systems whereby a court may prevent, or "estop" a person from making assertions or from going back on his or her word; the person being sanctioned is "estopped".
