The social pressure to circumcise can be overwhelming, as I found out when I begged my sister not to circumcise her three sons. Her rejection of my request included rejecting me.

Approximately one in three men worldwide is circumcised. According to the medical profession, “Circumcision is one of the most common medical procedures in the world, with 25 circumcisions performed every minute [Hammond, 1999]. It is also one of the oldest [Dunsmuir & Gordon, 1999; Lerman & Liao, 2001], and one of the simplest.”* The medical profession is paid handsomely to perform circumcisions, could they be biased?

I have always wondered why the cruel, ancient practice of circumcision, which is literally male genital mutilation, persists. Circumcision physically hurts men, probably psychologically too. Does cutting off the tender flesh and severing the sensitive nerve endings around the penis during circumcision lead to sexual dysfunction? Does circumcision cause the pitifully truncated orgasms that men sometimes have compared to women’s complete, whole-body orgasms? And, do frustrations caused by circumcision lead to sexual deviance in the future? Men outrank women in sexual deviance. (You can trust your own observations in life, yes?) Even if circumcision causes no harm, as they say, "Why fix it if it isn't broken?" They also say, "Uncut dick is not gross."

What is wrong with the male baby body that part of it must be cut off? Nothing, so why is there no general hue and cry against the practice of the male genital mutilation which is circumcision? Why are there no protests in the street? Is the issue too intimate to speak of, too catastrophically violating to even think about, even to solve such a severe and pervasive problem? Why is the erotic foreskin of men sliced off when they are newborns, long before they have matured and could object? Is this a symbolic castration representing the control of society? Is the act of circumcision each family’s way of submitting to society, by sacrificing something from the bodies of their baby boys, when in ancient times the whole babe might have been sacrificed?

That ancient books say it must be done is not answer enough. To say that health and hygiene require it is a modern lie. The science does not confirm this. Is the answer money?

“Circumcision is the surgical removal of the foreskin (prepuce) covering the tip of the penis on males. Boys are born with a hood of skin, called the foreskin, covering the head (or glans) of the penis. During a typical procedure, the foreskin is opened and then separated from the glans after inspection. The circumcision device (if used) is placed, and then the foreskin is clipped off. If done in the newborn period, the procedure takes about five to 10 minutes. Adult circumcision takes about one hour. The circumcision generally heals in five to seven days.”** The medical profession makes it sound like circumcision is akin to removing a skin tag, but, for example, in New England Surgery Center, Boston, Massachusetts the circumcision costs $2,500.*** If circumcision is such an insignificant procedure why does it have such a significant price? We cannot have it both ways, either circumcision is nothing much and should cost nothing much, or it is a very big deal which costs thousands of dollars to perform.
