Selflessness will drown you.

To be concerned more with the needs and wishes of others than with one's own is to be selfless. The poor are told to be selfless so as to prove themselves worthy. That is a lie. That is not the way the world works. If one does not think well of oneself and provide well for oneself, who will? I wish I had know way back then what I know now, that is that: it is much, much easier to help others swim successfully in life if you are not drowning in poverty yourself.
